Brief History

Thomas Mansion is a unique Victorian home currently under the care of the Fairmount Park Historic Preservation Trust. The house was built in 1869 for George Clifford Thomas and his wife Caroline Scheetz. Mr. Thomas left his estate to the city of Philadelphia when he passed away in 1907. Eventually the property was given the name Clifford Park and became part of the Fairmount Park system. More historical information will be revealed through the furnishings blog.

 Thomas Mansion is located in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Through the hard work of the Fairmount Park Historic Preservation Trust Thomas Mansion will be restored and leased to a fitting business that will ensure the magnificence of the property will last.

Project

Through my internship with the Fairmount Park Historic Preservation Trust and the History Department of Temple University I plan to research and develop a furnishings plan designed to recreate the interior of Thomas Mansion to Philadelphia-specific Victorian era spaces that will also reflect the taste and lifestyle of Mr. Thomas and his wife Caroline Scheetz.

Throughout the process I will share my my finds and experiences with the interested public in hope of achieving the following goals:

-  Recognize the community as an asset to preserving shared history.
-  Create a support network for the work at Thomas Mansion.
-  Explore the significance of objects as valuable reflections of history.
-  Share the enriching power of art, architecture, and historic preservation.
